Attention Professional Photographers – Time for an editorial comment.

I apologize for the soapbox moment, but I saw the same thing happen when digital cameras first came on the scene. A lot of professionals were convinced that digital was a fad, and no serious pro would trust their livelihood to digital camera given film was the gold standard for pros everywhere. Well, we’ve all seen where that debate ended. Film hasn’t disappeared totally, and may not for some applications, but for all practical purposes, mainstream professionals have kicked film to the curb.

If you are a professional photographer and shoot events like weddings, anniversary parties, graduations and the like, you need to seriously rethink what services you decide to offer your clients. Armed with a camera that can shoot both still images, and amazing video, it might be time for you to dig in, learn,  and master the ability to do both.

With the release of this camera, and the already well received Panasonic Lumix GH1, its just a matter of time before diversification will be essential. Future customers are going to demand that you deliver a full multimedia experience; and you’re going to need a camera like this one, or something similar to remain competitive.

Are you going to replace the videographer with state of the art video equipment at a high end wedding? Probably not, but the quality of your video will be excellent, and for anything less, you can offer a valuable extra that might mean the difference between getting the booking or not. It’s definitely something to consider. In any case, if you’re happy in your comfort zone as a photographer, that should be a warning sign. Technology is changing too rapidly for you to become complacent. To be and to remain competitive, I encourage you to embrace change and look at how you can use the latest technology to give your photography an edge.

OK, off the soapbox.
